At Coastal Pest Control we found this article and we thought the title was definitely written to get the people in Colorado to read it.  We know this article will get read here in Florida too, just out of curiosity.  We especially liked the Spam part.

From: Siera Santos, ssantos@koaa.com

A Black Forest farmer may have found fire ants in the bales of hay she ordered.

The drought in Colorado has many farmers and ranchers looking to other states to purchase hay. Karen Bueche is one of them.

Bueche spent more than $4,000 on 34 round bales of hay delivered from Texas on Monday. The hay came from an area under quarantine for imported fire ants, which includes most of the southeastern United States.

Although the hay was certified as “fire ant free,” she unloaded the bales and made an unpleasant discovery.

“I looked on the deck of the trailer and it was crawling full of ants. There were hundreds of ants,” Bueche said on Wednesday.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, imported fire ants “pose a direct danger to many plants, trees and agricultural crops.” The USDA began an investigation Wednesday afternoon by luring the ants out of the hay with Spam and then collecting samples for testing.

They could not confirm if the ants are indeed fire ants until laboratory results have returned.

In the meantime, Bueche is left wondering how she will feed her cattle.

“You get attached to your animals and they’re also the ones who pay your bills,” she said with tears in her eyes.

“I can’t move the hay. I can’t feed the hay. I can’t do anything.”

Coastal Pest Control here again – we don’t think you should lure fire ants with Spam.  You should call us, we will deal with them for you.

Did you know that fleas do not bite everyone?  For example if you skin temperature is less than 85 degrees normally they will leave you alone.  Unfortunately women and children usually have a higher skin temp and therefore get bitten more than men.  This also means if not everyone in your family has bites that they were bitten elsewhere.  Those pest little jumping bugs could be living very close to you.

Most fleas cannot reproduce from biting humans and we all know they most likely are on our pet or strays animals.  What usually happens is your pet gets fleas in your yard, eggs drop off your pet as they wander through the house.  Eggs love carpets, upholstered furniture and yes, beds.   You walk across the carpet, sit on a chair, lie down on your bed and your movement wakes those fleas up that “food” is available and suddenly your ankles, calves and feet are under attack. If you sit on your furniture and wake these little creepy fleas up you get bites on your any place in your upper body that is exposed.  If these little buggers live in your yard you can not only get bitten but fleas can hitch hike into your home on you.

Don’t look with disdain at your pets either.  Id you have any critters living in your attic area they may “pay” you in the form of fleas. This is when you will need to hire a professional extermination service to boot out the poacher and get rid of the fleas.

There are great long-term products that can be used on your pet, natural treatments or prescribed by your vet.  Stray animals that have set up housing need to be identified and removed.  Then your house and lawn also need to be treated by an exterminator to be more effective and reduce the chance of infestations down the road.

There is an old Turkish proverb – “One does not burn a blanket to get rid of a flea.” Heck no, you call Coastal PC instead.

It’s SPRING, which means all kinds of critters are hatching and emerging from hibernation this time of year. Insects and pests, particularly ants, roaches, termites, spiders and silverfish, are popping out in droves. Are you prepared to ward off these invaders from your home? Here are a few simple things you can do to help keep your house pest free right now:

  • Regularly clean around your fridge, stove and dishwasher to remove food crumbs, and wipe down baseboards. Be sure to clean kitchen counters after every meal.
  • Clean out your pantry and store open food items in airtight containers. Never store food items on the floor.
  • Rinse out all food or beverage cans and bottles before discarding them.
  • Keep garbage containers sealed and remove regularly.
  • Trim tree branches and shrubs around your house and remove any fallen branches, foliage or debris that accumulated over the winter.
